Safety Measures to be taken at Construction Site!

Working at construction sites is considered to be one of the most dangerous occupations. Of course, the employers needs to excel his visual management skills on site and take care about their employees’ security and the safety of the tools they work with, but the employees themselves need to be cautious about their safety while working in such hazardous environment.

Employees need to Double-Check their work area. For example scaffolds and ladders at construction sites are considered to be associated with high rate of injuries so one must make sure that they are not wobbly and shaky. Scaffold must be sound, rigid and sufficient to carry its own weight plus four times the maximum intended load without settling or displacement. It must be erected on solid footing. Unstable objects, such as barrels, boxes, loose bricks or concrete blocks must not be used to support scaffolds or planks. Correct ladder must be used for specific task and should be inspected before use for any defects. Avoid using ladders with metallic components near electrical work and overhead power lines.

Consider using aerial lifts or elevated platforms to provide safer elevated working surfaces. Use safety net systems or personal fall arrest systems (body harnesses). Use of a protective system for trenches feet deep or greater can prevent dozens of fatalities and hundreds of injuries. Trenches must be inspected by a competent person prior to entry and after any hazard-increasing event such as a rainstorm, vibrations or excessive surcharge loads. Also proper signages should be displayed at the site. Signages should be huge enough to get noticed, this can prevent accidents on site.

One should be careful of stepping and touching heavily loaded electrical wires lying around. Also, be careful while using electrical tools, some might have unprotected cables which can cause electrical fuses which may kill. Make sure to have fencing at your site to avoid newly built constructions from falling on workers. Also the workers should be very well familiar with emergency exit route and emergency equipment.

Cranes along with their wire rope, chains and hook should be inspected before use for any damages and all crane controls should be checked to insure proper operation. Ensure that the load does not exceed the crane’s rated capacity. Raise the load a few inches to verify balance and the effectiveness of the brake system. Operators should be trained and certified to ensure that they operate forklifts safely. Do not allow any employee under 18 years old to operate a forklift. Stunt driving and horseplay should be prohibited. Operators shall always wear seatbelts.

Employers should provide all clothing and work gear to employees, and make sure that all of them meet quality and security standards. Eye and Face Protection can be ensured by providing Safety glasses or face shields that are worn during welding, cutting, grinding, nailing (or when working with concrete and/or harmful chemicals or when exposed to flying particles). Eye and face protectors are selected based on anticipated hazards. Safety glasses or face shields are worn when exposed to any electrical hazards including work on energized electrical systems. Hand Protection can be ensured by providing Gloves that fit snugly. Workers should wear the right gloves for the job (for example, heavy-duty rubber gloves for concrete work, welding gloves for welding). Construction workers should wear work shoes or boots with slip-resistant and puncture-resistant soles in order to assure foot protection. Safety-toed footwear can be worn to prevent crushed toes when working around heavy equipment or falling objects. Head Protection should be provided to Workers, they shall wear hard hats where there is a potential for objects falling from above, bumps to their heads from fixed objects, or of accidental head contact with electrical hazards. Hard hats should be routinely inspected for dents, cracks or deterioration.

Employees who work at the construction sites are exposed to all kinds of risks daily, therefore, they have to be extra cautious and vigilant. These people play a big role at our society; they build safe building and constructions for all of us that is why they have to take care about their own safety at first.
